Stem are a duo, formed at the beginning of lockdown, by Emma Baldwin and Steve Hollister. The band name St of Steve and Em of Emma, also relates to musical stems on notes, and means voice in South African. In addition to this, Stem is also a group of similar sound sources when mixing; so many meanings for one band name. The duo met when Steve was Emma’s postman and asked her to join his function band, DisCover, who he drums for, as their lead singer. Over time, they decided they wanted to learn guitar, and so have done together and have enjoyed writing multiple songs, which have had some amateur success, much to their surprise and joy.

Concentrate is the latest release from Stem, with hopes of local (and dare they dream for) national radio play. It is a song about living for today and making the most of each moment, without sweating the small stuff; a message we can all learn from. The song production is more complex than previous recordings, with the help of their producer Gabor, from Onlys Music Production. The hope is that the extra sound within the song will help to attract more listeners and keep listeners engaged and interested more easily, than with just guitar and vocals.

Emma has previously written and sung in other original musical acts, of both folk and rock genres, but never before has managed to be involved in the musical process. Emma describes song writing as her therapy, her way to clear her mind and air her thoughts.

Steve is new to songwriting, but is a natural, developing finger picking styles and chord progressions as though he’s been doing it his whole life.

The duo write the majority of their material together, with Emma usually leading the melody and lyrics and Steve often putting chord sequences together, however, this isn’t always the case. Stem hope that the songs are relatable and enjoyable for the listener, hoping to instil feelings of hope and positivity.
Drawing musical influences from their wide and varied taste of various folk and country artists, such as Brandi Carlile and Amy MacDonald, Stem have been complimented on their developing sound and lyrical content, as well as their tuneful melodies.
The duo Facebook page facebook.com/stemduo offers a live song performed weekly from their couch, giving snippets of information of what the pair have been up to and what is upcoming, along with a weekly performance.
